Avalanche Danger Scale
There was a problem loading the danger rose
Avalanche Danger
The avalanche danger for the Vail-Summit zone is HIGH (Level 4) on north, northeast, east and southeast aspects near and above treeline. Elsewhere, danger is CONSIDERABLE (Level 3) except south and southwest aspects below treeline where the danger is MODERATE (Level 2). Large, human-triggered avalanches are very likely in many areas.
Weather Discusion
A cold front has moved into Colorado this morning, and is ushering in some colder temperatures for this afternoon. The associated low-pressure trough responsible for the heavy snowfall last night and this morning is moving east onto the plains. Cloud cover is breaking up and giving way to partly sunny skies for the Northern and Central Mountains. There are still some lingering snow flurries over portions of the Southern Mountains at ridge-line elevations and along the Continental Divide. This will continue for the remainder of the afternoon but additional snowfall accumulations will only be a trace to 2 inches. The exception might be along the north side of the 550 corridor, where strong northwest flow is funneling remnant moisture into the Gorge. Here, 3 to 5 inches of snow could accumulate by the end of the day.
